The Evolution to Euro 5 Diesel
On April 1, 2021, Malaysia officially transitioned to EURO 5 diesel standards. This milestone reduced the maximum sulphur content from 0.05% (Euro 2M) to just 0.001% (10 ppm).
Why Euro 5 Matters:
- Engine Protection: Significantly reduces the buildup of harmful deposits, extending the lifespan of injectors and exhaust systems.
- Environmental Impact: A massive reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions, contributing to cleaner air quality.
- Efficiency: Optimized for modern, high-performance engines in the automotive, marine, and industrial sectors.
Since its implementation on July 1, 2019, the B7 Biodiesel Programme has been the mandatory standard for Malaysia’s industrial sector. This regulation ensures that industrial fuel consumption aligns with national sustainability goals while maintaining high performance for heavy machinery.
Understanding the B7 Mandate:
- Mandatory Industrial Supply: All diesel supplied for local industrial use must be the B7 blend (a mixture of 93% petroleum diesel and 7% palm-based biodiesel).
- Restricted Distribution of B0: To maintain industry-wide compliance, the selling or distribution of unblended B0 diesel for standard industrial operations is strictly prohibited except for certain sectors or with approvals.
Compliance and Safe Storage
For industries utilizing skid tanks for on-site storage, strict regulatory compliance is mandatory to ensure safety and environmental protection.
1. Licensing and Applications
If you store diesel by more than 20 liters then you are required to apply for storage licence or being called Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit which will be issued by the Enforcement Division, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN). The application can be applied through this link https://spb.kpdn.gov.my/login
New application will take about Five (5) working days from the date the complete application is received. While maximum if will last for 36 months or 3 years. So far, there is no processing fee is charged.
