Diesel
Diesel is produced from the fractional distillation of crude oil at the oil refineries. Diesel is used in various applications throughout many industries. These includes automotive diesel engines, marine boats, industrial boilers, generator sets and other industrial applications.
Effective 1st April 2021, Malaysia introduced "EURO 5 diesel", where the sulphur content is at a maximum of 0.001%. This was a major improvement from the maximum requirement of 0.05% previously for Euro 2M diesel. The vast reduction in sulphur content helps protect our equipments and the environment.
Based on the chart below, we can see the Sulphur content of different diesel grades.

Majority of the Diesel available in Malaysia today is a Biodiesel which contains some palm oil products. Most of the Biodiesel sold in Malaysia’s stations are B10 Diesel which consist of an approximate mixture of 90% diesel and 10% palm oil base products. As for those sold to Industries its B7 Diesel with an approximate mixture of 93% diesel and 7% palm oil base products.
The B7 programme for the industrial sector was implemented on July 1, 2019. Diesel for industrial use is commonly stored in skid tanks. To store diesel at any site, a storage license is required from the government. Once a site gets an approval from the local Bomba, applications can be made via https://www.bless.gov.my/bless with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-Operatives and Consumerism for approval. From a safety aspect, it is also a requirement that storage tanks are surrounded with a bund wall so that spills will be controlled and recovered. The capacity of the bund wall should be at least 110% volume of the largest storage tank.
